Scientific research asks specific questions and provides a way of learning about and understanding the world (and beyond) that is rigorous and based on empirical evidence.
Scientific knowledge is arrived at through a process of inductive and deductive reasoning as well as dialogue, debate, peer review, and the building of consensus among experts.
For example, science cannot tell us whether we should plan to go to the beach or a movie this weekend, but meteorological data can help us predict what the weather will be like, which might inform our decision.
Science does not need to be in opposition with other ways of knowing. There are times when multiple ways of knowing help inform our thinking and decision making.
But there are certain times when scientific evidence and research should be prioritized in helping us make decisions. And, unless we have years of experience and study in one area of science, we need to rely on experts.
For example, when making a decision related to our health or medical needs, we want to prioritize evidence from high quality scientific research AND rely on the expertise of our doctor / pharmacist / specialist.
